Captains’ Report 2017 – 2018
It is a great honour and a privilege to have been given the opportunity to be the Men’s Captain of Whitley Bay Golf Club. I would like to thank the Past Captains and the members for putting their faith in me. I would also like to thank the Staff of this great club for their support, which ensured that we have had a truly memorable year; especially to our Caterers and Bar Staff who have worked extremely hard to make all of the social occasions a great success.
Whitley Bay Golf Club is a great Club and the course has been extremely well presented this year, something which has been expressed to me by members and of course our visitors. Well done to Simon and the rest of the Greens Staff who have provided us with an excellent course all year round.
Well done to Dave and Richard in the Pro’s Shop who have helped many of us with their coaching and advice, and continue to help the Club grow. They have been a great support to me.
I would like to thank those members of the Board who give their time freely and willingly to help run the club in 2017.
Congratulations to Paul Taylor and Seton Wakenshaw for reaching the Finals of the foursome earlier in the year. It was great to be a part of that experience.
Our entertainments team have presented another great year for us, with a mixed bag of “pop culture” which has seen well attended functions, and of course to our continued support from the members who attend.
One of the highlights of the year was the Captains Drive in; its not easy hitting 260 yards off the tee, into a head wind…..with a five iron. Fortunately the golf ball was recovered.
I had a great family meal to start the year as Captain, all in all an excellent day, wonderfully supported by the members. Captain’s week provided an unusual test as I wasn’t allowed to play in my own competition. However I took great delight in watching everyone tee off into a hurricane. Well done to Graham Miller who was a worthy
Many thanks of course to the Ladies’ Captains, Chris and Margaret, with whom I shared this great experience.
We have hosted some important events this year, the County knockouts presented some of the best golf ever played here, in tricky conditions. Andrew Minnikin was a worthy winner. The Seniors Open was extremely well represented, not only by the entrants but by the support of the whole Senior section. The Pro-Am was a great success, and it looks as though it will flourish for years to come.
The role I am most proud of playing, was that of being Men’s Team Captain, they allowed me into their world of golf, and never let me forget it. They are all great ambassadors of the golf club. Congratulation to Mark Clements who was a worthy Club Champion this year.
A special thanks goes to the Men’s Vice Captain, Paul Suttie, who has been a great companion, he has worked tirelessly to support our catering staff, and to promote the summer ball; I know it will be a great success, and a testimony to his hard work. Good Luck to Howard Kemp as the new Men’s Vice Captain; I am delighted that he is taking up this role.
I won’t mention the Junior section, just to thank two special people; Ian Suttie, and Chris Meikle deserve a huge amount of praise for the Juniors’ success, we have a fantastic Junior section, and long may it continue.
If I have missed anyone out, its because this report is limited to one sheet of A4 paper, I shall just say that I have tried hard to represent this great club, answered all the emails sent to me, listened to every moan and groan, and accepted every compliment with as much grace as I can muster. Many thanks to you all for your continued support-
Dave Burston Men’s Captain 2017-2018
