TR Percy

TR Percy Knockout 13th May 2019

Whitley Bay Ladies were looking forward to their first T R Percy match at home to Stocksfield.
The teams were very closely matched with only one or two shots being given to the opposition.
The matches were played in glorious sunshine and the players reported that the course was in splendid condition.
In a close fought competition the teams were informed that they had to play until a result was achieved, at that stage the points were even, with two points each, unfortunately this meant that 3 matches had to continue playing up the 19th hole until a result was achieved. It was all very tense, the points could have gone either way and everyone was starting to get hungry.
The final result of 5 points to Stocksfield, 2 points to Whitley Bay, did not show the closeness of the matches. Everyone had an enjoyable afternoon, good golf, good food and a catch up with old friends.

Well played Whitley Bay T R Percy Team.

Rosie shoots 23 under to win the Fairhaven Trophy

At the weekend of 4th and 5th May 2019, Rosie played in the Fairhaven Trophy at Fairhaven Golf club in Lytham St Anne’s. It’s an international girls & boys U18 competition over 72 holes. They have a girls & boys competition plus a nations cup ( teams of 2/3 entered by their national federations) & an overall winner measured against the boys scratch (it’s 72 for men’s card & 75 for ladies)
Rosie has scores of 70( -5) 68 (-7) 69 (-6) 70 (-5) for a wire to wire victory, -23 against ladies standard scratch & 20 shots better than the 2nd placed girl.
She also beat all of the boys to finish top of both leader boards & lead her England team to victory in the nations cup. There were 20 international teams entered in the nations cup.
In the boys field were most of the England boys u18 squad, teams from the German, Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian, Scottish, Irish & Welsh National u18 squads, along with girls from the English, Welsh & Swedish National squads. Rosie’s score beats the best ever boys score by 4 & the best ever girls score by 11 & once all of handicap reductions are through her handicap will be down to +3
It’s her first national competition win & hopefully she can keep her form going over the summer. In 2 weeks time it’s the English Women’s Amateur Championship at Saunton Golf Club, Devon & then the following week she is off to the German Girls Championship at St Leon Rott golf club.

Rosie Belsham – The Junior Open Update

The Junior Open was a fantastic experience, the players were all made to feel like pro’s. From the opening ceremony on the 18th green of the old course, where they received medals from Jordan Speith to the goodie bags supplied by Rolex, which included a pair of golf shoes (but unfortunately not a watch), everything was organised like a professional tournament. As each player was the only representative from their country, they felt extra special. Every time Rosie was introduced it was From England & Whitley Bay golf club, so it also reflected well on the club. As the Vice-Captain of the R&A is from Newcastle he personally introduced her to many of the officials from other golf associations, including the USGA president as Rosie, from England & Whitley Bay Golf Club.

The course was really tough, the girls were off the white tees, same as the boys, on all but 4 holes so they added 600+yards to the length of the red course but reduced par from 73 to 70. Rosie shot 74,77,72 to finish 37th overall & 11th girl. She had the worst of the wind on days 2 & 3 so a bit unlucky, but overall was happy with how she played.

On Monday Rosie travels to Oslo in Norway with the England U16 team to play in the European Young Masters. This is the European U16 championship. It’s a nations cup & individual event with a boys & girls title plus a team championship. There are only 2 girls & 2 boys selected to represent England, so another great honour for Rosie & for Whitley Bay Golf Club, with 27 European countries competing. The tournament runs from Thursday 26th – Saturday 28th at Hauger Golf Club near Oslo & is run by the European Golf Association.

Rosie would like to say a huge thank you to all club members for their support and good wishes.
